EXPERIENCE LITERATURE PROJECT:
This book project has NOT been officially introduced. Today's date, TBD. At the conclusion of this project, you will evaluate your skills in the following:
1. I can quote accurately from a text to explain what it means in order
to make logical inferences.
2. I can analyze text details and characters to determine the theme of
a text.
3. I can analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop
and interact over the course of a text.
To accomplish these learning objectives the class will analyze the text Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor by completing a jigsaw activity. A Jigsaw is a cooperative learning strategy that enables each student of a "home" group to specialize in one aspect of a topic (for example, one group studies habitats of rainforest animals, another group studies predators of rainforest animals). Students meet with members from other groups who are assigned the same aspect, and after mastering the material, return to the "home" group and teach the material to their group members. With this strategy, each student in the "home" group serves as a piece of the topic's puzzle and when they work together as a whole, they create the complete jigsaw puzzle.
Why Jigsaw???
Using the framework from the Lit Kit Project from last year, each group has been assigned a chapter from the book and must complete a display board detailing the story elements of their specific chapter. The displays will be grouped together to form a comprehensive visual representation of the entire text at the conclusion of the project.
In addition, each group must present the story structure elements presented in their chapter. Using the experts information report, students must detail the character interactions, event sequences, problems and solutions explained in their chapter(s). Once identified, the story elements must be analyzed and explained. Think about:
1. What can be inferred about the characters based on the events of your chapter and the chapters leading up to yours? Site evidence.
2. Where do the events of your chapter fit in the elements of narrative plot structure?
3. Describe how your chapter influences the theme of the overall text.
In addition to the Lit Kit project board, You may present your chapter in any way you see fit.
